I have made a mistake for which I would like to apologize to you – new version of A Fistful of Darkness

I have made a mistake for which I would like to apologize to you: It has been brought to my attention, thankfully, that I use a racist term in A Fistful of Darkness that some of you find incredibly insensitive. This was not my intention and if it had come to my attention during sensivite reading, I would have removed it immediately. I want to emphasize that this was not a mistake on the part of my sensitive readers, but that the mistake is entirely my own fault. Even if the setting includes racism as a possibility, I want to assure that I do not want to irritate, insult or offend the players of the game. In times of racially motivated police violence, the use was not appropriate. Since I am not a native speaker of the language, I ask you to forgive me for this lack of insight.

I have therefore created a new version of A Fistful of Darkness (version 1.4) as soon as possible, renaming said Special Ability in The Law playbook and other uses of the word.

I want to say again that I am sorry and that it was not my intention to offend anyone.

while I dont mind the change you made, i should tell you that you didnt use a racist term. it is common knowledge that 'coon is short for raccoon, and the fact that it has in the past been used for racist comparison does not deligitimize the contraction itself. 'coon hunting was a common practice, and i have found no evidence of the phrase being used as a racist euphemism. I am guessing you were influenced by the reference to 'coon hunting in the film "true grit", where it is clearly not a racist usage.

insofar as people nowadays see " 'coon" and think only "racist", they will misunderstand things like " 'coon hunt" and see racism where there is none, historically and currently. censoring the term only strengthens the racist element. the only way to fix this would be to use the term in its legitimate form.

that being said, i can agree with your decision to remove it. there is no reason to host socio-linguistic drama in our hobby's publications.

Thank you for your perspective on the subject. It helps me a lot, because I can hardly assess the situation objectively myself. Yes, originally it was a True Grit quote that I had adopted as a Special Ability. I had very much hoped to avoid something like that in my first public game, but that was certainly very naive thinking in terms of the Western setting. For me, it's important that no player is outraged by my game. Everything else can be settled together at the table.

  • Kudos to you for responding and making the correction.
  • Kudos to the player who raised the issue to stop the language from being perpetuated and make the game more inclusive for everyone.

Thanks for the feedback. This helps a lot.
